Is Facial Plastic Surgery Permanent?

One of the questions that usually comes up during consultations is how long the results of surgery will last. This answer will vary from patient to patient, but each procedure will have an average expectation for results. During a consultation, I can give you a more detailed explanation, but here are some of the basic answers.

How Long Do Facial Plastic Surgery Results Last?

A majority of facial plastic surgery procedures do not create permanent results. This is particularly true of procedures that are intended to address signs of aging in the face like wrinkles or sagging skin. While procedures like these can help you turn back the clock, the natural aging process will continue slowly over time. This means that you will start to see some small aging signs resume eventually.

Facelift

The average facelift results can last for up to 15 years. If you opt for a mini-facelift, however, you can expect about five years. These results should include reduced jowls, wrinkles, or sagging through the cheeks and jawline area. To further delay any signs of aging after a facelift, I usually recommend non-surgical “touch-ups” like dermal fillers to maintain a youthful look.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasties create a more awake and youthful look by reducing excess skin and tissue around the eyes to resolve sagging or wrinkles. The skin around the eyes is very delicate, and frequent movement in the area means that aging signs are very common. Most blepharoplasty results last between five and seven years on average. Botox injections can help soften facial expressions that might lead to crow’s feet re-emerging after your blepharoplasty.

Brow Lift

I will recommend a brow lift when patients are worried about drooping or sagging eyebrows and creases through the forehead. After surgery, you can usually enjoy your results for about 10-12 years. Over time, frequent movement, sun damage, and the effects of gravity can cause your results to fade. Botox injections will soften these repetitive movements, and a good skin care routine will also help extend the results of your brow lift.

Otoplasty

An otoplasty, sometimes call ear surgery or ear pinning surgery, is one of the few facial procedures which is considered more or less permanent. During an otoplasty, I will remove a small amount of cartilage from the ear to reshape its position. These structural changes will not shift over time as the rest of the face ages. The exception is that the earlobes may become stretched or droop over time.

How to Maintain Your Plastic Surgery Results

After plastic surgery, it’s important to maintain good skin health so you can enjoy your results for as long as possible. Follow a suitable skincare routine using quality products with anti-aging ingredients. Avoid excess sun exposure as much as possible and be sure to wear SPF daily. Maintain a healthy and stable weight by eating a balanced and nutritious diet and exercising regularly.

Non-surgical procedures can also help maintain your results. Neuromodulators like Botox and dermal fillers like Juvéderm can each improve a youthful appearance. During your consultation, we can discuss a long-term plan to keep up your results after your healing process is complete.
